The starting quarterback battle at Notre Dame seems to be the most difficult to predict at this stage of the offseason. The Fighting Irish are looking to replace Riley Leonard, who led them to the national championship game last season following his transfer from Duke.

On3's Pete Nakos asked Jeremiyah Love about Notre Dame's quarterback battle ahead of the 2025 college football season in an interview released Monday. The running back remained neutral, expressing confidence in both contenders, CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey.

“I care more about my room,” Love said. “I know we got great coaches, and whoever ends up playing quarterback, I know that they’re going to be ready.”

The competition for the starting role between Carr and Minchey follows the exit of Steve Angeli, who transferred to Syracuse in the spring. The Irish coaching staff faces a pivotal decision in fall camp.

With two options left in the battle, Irish coach Marcus Freeman expressed his strong admiration for the starting quarterback race late in May.

“I love it because I love competition,” Freeman said. “Now, you can add a little bit of pressure through competition to see who can perform under those high-pressure situations.

“I think they’re both capable of being the starting quarterback at Notre Dame or they wouldn’t be in this quarterback battle. But I’m looking forward to an extremely challenging and high-pressure fall camp.”

Marcus Freeman hints at Notre Dame playing a two-quarterback system

Marcus Freeman appeared on “Always College Football” earlier this month, where he discussed Notre Dame’s ongoing quarterback competition. Interestingly, he revealed that the Irish could utilize a two-quarterback system at times in 2025 to become unpredictable.

“You’re going to look for any way to help your team win," Freeman said. "If that means you use two quarterbacks for certain situations, then you’re going to find a way to use two quarterbacks.
“There might be two quarterbacks on the field at the same time. Who knows? Creativity is so important, and we have some creative football coaches and players here that we’ll come up with the right plan."

If Notre Dame implements a two-quarterback system, it would be strictly used in specific situations. Freeman emphasized that the Irish will have a clear starter, with any additional quarterback usage serving as a tactical move to challenge opposing defenses.
