In Week 7, BYU faced the TCU Horned Frogs in a game which they lost 44-11. Following the defeat, coach Kalani Sitake managed to change the narrative about his team with their game against Texas Tech last weekend. On the other hand, the Texas Longhorns have been a dominant team so far this season. Their only loss came at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners during the Red River rivalry. Following this defeat, they managed to secure a 24-31 win over the Houston Cougars last weekend.

Can coach Steve Sarkisian and his team continue this momentum to make it to the college football playoffs?

BYU vs Texas: Head-to-head

The BYU vs Texas rivalry dates back to 1987 when these teams faced each other for the first time. In that game, the Cougars emerged victorious at the Texas Memorial Stadium, defeating the Longhorns 22-17.

Despite the rivalry spanning over decades, both these teams have clashed on the gridiron just five times. This is because the Cougars were a part of different conferences over the years. From 1962 to 1998, they were a part of the WAC, after which they joined the Mountain West from 1999 to 2010.

From 2011 to last year, the BYU Cougars were considered as an independent FBS team. They accepted the invitation to join the Big 12 in September 2021 and started playing as a part of this conference this season.

This will be the sixth meeting of the BYU vs Texas game. It might also be the final meeting of this rivalry, as the Longhorns will join the SEC next year. Despite being a strong contender for the college football playoff, the Longhorns do not boast a great record in the BYU vs Texas rivalry. The Cougars lead the series 4-1.
