As the College Football Playoff creeps closer, bettors are picking favorites to win the event. Interestingly, Alabama is often projected to miss the playoff, but is still one of the top teams being chosen to win the tournament. Here's a rundown on the top 10 teams most likely to win the CFP title via recent Fanduel betting odds.

10. Alabama (+4000)

ESPN's FPI measures the 8-3 Tide at a 27.8% shot of making the College Football Playoff. Having them even at +4000 suggests that bettors think that if Alabama cashes in those slightly better than 1 in 4 odds to make the field, they've got a very serious shot at winning the title.

For a team that's gone 5-3 in conference play, that's a pretty bold statement of faith.

9. SMU (+4000)

On the other hand, 10-1 SMU is projected into the field – but just barely. The Mustangs are a perfect 7-0 in ACC play and have already earned their spot in the league title game. With the recent SEC stumbles, the Mustangs are much more likely to have a spot in the playoff, regardless of the ACC title game outcome.

8. Miami (+2500)

Speaking of the ACC, Miami holds a solid 78.8% chance of being in the playoff field, but still faces relatively long odds. The 10-1 Hurricanes haven't played a murderers' row schedule in the ACC and, in fact, have no games on their schedule that involve teams currently in the top 25.

7. Tennessee (+2100)

Tennessee's chances of making the field are almost identical to Miami's (79.5% per FPI) and the 9-2 Vols do get slightly better odds. That said, Tennessee, like Miami, has never been to the College Football Playoff, so this is some untilled soil for the Volunteer program.

6. Penn State (+1600)

Surprisingly, Penn State has also never played in the playoff. The 10-1 Nittany Lions are probably missing out on the Big Ten title game, but might be able to use the extra rest to get ready for the first round of the playoff.

PSU's 98.3% shot at a playoff berth suggets that, at this point, we're looking at very different sorts of teams than those above.

5. Notre Dame (+1400)

The 10-1 Irish have done a nice job bouncing back from a Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois. That said, the Army is the only team on their schedule still within the top 25 (and they're No. 25). The Irish are 0-2 all-time in CFP games, but bettors think they could show a massive improvement this year.

4. Texas (+450)

The Horns are part of a group of four true favorites. They have a 97.1% shot at the playoff, so the 10-1 Longhorns probably don't have to be too concerned with getting to the big show.

Funnily enough, even in the mighty SEC, the only two currently ranked teams on Texas' slate are Georgia, the only team to beat the Horns, and Texas A&M, who they play tomorrow.

3. Oregon (+390)

The Ducks have the imposing 99.9% chance at the playoff, per FPI. And why not? At 11-0, they're the last unbeaten power this year. While Oregon hasn't been to the playoff since 2014, the Ducks certainly are an impressive team with a legitimate shot to take home the title.

2. Georgia (+350)

The 9-2 Georgia still gets significant respect in the playoff. The Bulldogs do have a 5.2% chance of missing the field per FPI, but they've clinched a spot in the SEC title game and have won two of the last three playoffs. The 12-team battle is a brave new world, but Georgia is probably well-equipped.

1.Ohio State (+260)

The 10-1 Buckeyes are the betting favorite, which is interesting. OSU is 3-4 all-time in the playoff, which also makes the team 1-4 since 2014.

Ohio State has played a strong schedule and is a one-point loss to Oregon away from perfection. But expecting a postseason breakthrough from the Buckeyes could be a big ask. Time will tell.
