Ex-WR Grant Frerking fraud accusations: What did the former Tennessee wideout do?

Grant Frerking played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers. He was with the program as a walk-on from 2017 to 2022. The former wide receiver saw playing time in 13 games and recorded 12 receiving yards before moving on to a different career path.

What did Grant Frerking do?

According to a Knox News investigation, the ex-Tennessee Volunteers walk-on scammed customers by acting like he still worked at Metro Straw. It was a company Frerking founded while in high school, which had a $1 million valuation.

Frerking reportedly tricked customers into making deposits by promising them the company's services. Apart from being accused of scamming, Frerking also had to evacuate two apartments because of unpaid bills.

Metro Straw shared a statement on their website clarifying that they parted ways with Frerking two years ago and that they aren't involved in any ongoing partnership with the former Tennessee player.

"Metro Straw and former owner Grant Frerking have parted ways for 2 years," the statement read.
"Metro Straw does not associate with Grant Frerking in any way. Metro Straw continues to work in delivering top pine straw and mulch services to the residents of Metro Atlanta and it's surrounding areas."

Did Grant Frerking work for the Tennessee Volunteers after his playing career?

After his collegiate stint ended in 2022, the Vols hired Frerking as a part-time consultant in 2023. He worked alongside coach Josh Heupel and aided them in internal and external affairs.

According to his contract with the Vols, Frerking is employed till June 30. The program paid him $7,500 every six months for his services, with the last payment being in January. So far, the Vols have paid the former wide receiver $30,000 in salary.

The University's spokesperson, Jason Baum, clarified to Knox News that they won't renew Frerking's contract, as he hasn't done any recent work for the program.

Moreover, Frerking worked for some time with On3. He worked on the NIL side of things with the company before parting ways on May 27 because of "alleged criminal conduct", as per the statement provided by On3.
