According to reports, Suggs was arrested for allegedly using a corporate credit card for personal use, which totaled more than $24,000 at her former job. The 55-year-old was charged with two felonies: grand theft and scheme to defraud.

Suggs was also charged with four misdemeanor counts of false claims on travel vouchers.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Suggs had made wire transfers, cash withdrawals and personal purchases at casinos while on business trips while serving as CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation. It is a state-backed nonprofit focused on sports development.

Investigators said that she misrepresented the spending as business meals and failed to fully repay the foundation for her personal expenditures.

Suggs handed herself to authorities on Monday after months of investigation into the matter. She was released on a $13,500 bond later in the day.

Florida A&M's interim President Timothy Beard addressed the allegations against Suggs in a statement.

"Florida A&M University is aware of the allegations involving our athletics director, Angela Suggs, while she was working with a former employer," Beard said. "While the matter is unrelated to her duties as an employee at FAMU, we are monitoring the situation and will respond in the future as appropriate."

Suggs, who graduated from FAMU, worked at the Florida Sports Foundation for nearly seven years. She previously held roles as Florida A&M's senior associate athletic director for external affairs and senior woman administrator.

In September 2024, Suggs was hired as FAMU's Vice President and Director of Athletics. She hired 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward as the Rattlers' men's basketball coach in April.
