Indiana vs Michigan State: Preview

The Hoosiers are a 7.5-point favorite on the road, while the over/under is set at 51.5 points.

Indiana has been one of the most surprising teams this season. The Hoosiers are coming off a home win where starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke didn't play.

Coach Curt Cignetti, however, is optimistic that Rourke will be able to start against Michigan State.

"Optimistic on Kurtis Rourke," Cignetti said, via Yahoo. "He's thrown the last few days, building up. Workload will increase as the week goes on. That's all I'm going to say about it."

If Rourke can't go, backup Tayven Jackson will start. He went 11-for-19 last week for 124 yards but Cignetti believes the backup QB can be better.

"There was good and bad. He's got to build on the good and eliminate the bad," Cignetti said. "He'll have a good film session with Coach (Tino) Sunseri this evening. Like everybody else, better, worse, never stay the same. Need to be better tonight in the walk-through."

This season, Indiana has been led by Rourke who's thrown for 1,941 yards, 15 touchdowns and three interceptions. Justice Ellison has rushed for 637 yards and nine touchdowns.

As a team, the Hoosiers have recorded nine interceptions and 24 sacks.

Michigan State, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing loss to Michigan in a game that Aidan Chiles threw for 189 yards and a touchdown, while Nathan Carter rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Heading into the Indiana game, coach Jonathan Smith said, via HoosierHuddle:

"We have to move on to a big-time opponent, one of the hottest teams in the country. Doing it in all three phases. You look at Indiana, offensively they’re doing some things and can score points in bunches.
"Defensively, got some good players running around a solid scheme. You don’t win every game by accident. One of the hottest teams in the country, so we’re going to have to reload and regroup. Excited to get back to Spartan Stadium for a big-time environment and another opportunity moving forward.”

Indiana has yet to trail in a game this season, and with Rourke likely starting, the Hoosiers should be able to go on the road and cruise to a big win here.

Michigan State's defense will have a hard time stopping Indiana's potent offense, while the Hoosiers' defense should be able to get a turnover or two to cement the win.

Prediction: Indiana 28, Michigan State 17
