Is Jalil Tucker going to San Diego State?

Jalil Tucker, one of the most talented cornerbacks on the West Coast of the United States, could be on the move. He signed with the Oregon Ducks as a four-star recruit, ranked No. 74 overall out of high school, but played sparingly as a freshman, only recording two tackles in two games.

Tucker has a long, athletic frame, and at 6-foot, 180 pounds, he should be able to be a star. He is currently the top-ranked defensive back still in the NCAA transfer portal, and rumors link him with the San Diego State Aztecs.

Why is San Diego State the leading candidate for Jalil Tucker?

We already know the Tucker family as Jalil Tucker's father spoiled his initial commitment to Oregon. The family seems to be a close-knit group, and Tucker is from San Diego, California, so a move there seems to make sense.

When looking at Tucker's skillset and body type, he feels like he could be the prototypical player out wide on offense. Well, it has been rumored that San Diego State will let him attempt to play wide receiver as well as cornerback. Tucker excelled at both spots at Lincoln High School in San Diego. That could be the deciding factor in Tucker's search for a new home.

For the Aztecs, this could be a major grab as they can have the theme of bringing someone like Tucker home to San Diego. San Diego State finished the 2022 season with a 7-6 record (5-3 Mountain West Conference) while losing 25-23 in the Hawaii Bowl to Middle Tennessee State.

Tucker would be the biggest recruit in the program, and San Diego State has some holes to fill in its secondary with some defensive backs leaving. The talent level throughout the Mountain West is nowhere near equal to a Power Five conference like the Pac-12. He should be able to go right in and dominate as a speedy cornerback/wide receiver threat and give the Aztecs a huge boost.

Will the San Diego State Aztecs become a superpower that is threatening to make the College Football Playoff next season? No. However, they should continue to improve and create a solid culture of talented players.
