Blake Corum in action for the Michigan Wolverines

University of Michigan star running back, Blake Corum took the Wolverines’ faithful by surprise by announcing his return to the Ann Arbor for the 2023 season.

Despite having season-ending knee surgery in December, Corum was an All-American and a Heisman Trophy candidate. Had it not been for the injury, Corum was well on his way to the 2023 NFL draft.

However, he announced his return to Michigan in January. While it was almost clear to all that Corum was on his way to the league after getting surgery for his meniscus, things seemed to have changed. Coach Jim Harbaugh was all for him heading to the league.

Will Blake Corum Play in 2023?

After thought and consideration, Corum knew returning to college football was his best bet. While pundits, coaches and his agent backed him for entering the draft even with a torn meniscus, Corum’s gut said otherwise.

“But it was more than that," Corum said. "I tell everyone to think about the bigger picture,”

While many may think the bigger picture would be football-related, he had a holistic view. Corum knew he wouldn't be able to showcase his best at the combine in February and other predraft workouts. He had other plans, too.

Being the first to go to college from his family, this was more about securing that family pride of obtaining a college degree. It was important to recover completely and showcase his talent next year. However, another year at Ann Arbor also gives him opportunities to continue engaging with the community that has done so much for him.

As he announced his return, Michigan fans celebrate his return on social media.

Blake Corum: A monumental presence

Corum put on a heck of a show for the Wolverines before his injury late last season. The running back stacked numbers that gave him a run at the Heisman Trophy (finishing seventh in voting): 1,457 yards and 18 touchdowns in 12 games. He had pretty much announced his arrival to the NFL.

Backing his talent and believing in himself, Corum opted for another season. With the talent he possesses, his decision defers his entry to the league by just a year, which was a gamble he was willing to take.

As he returns, Blake Corum should be a key asset for the University of Michigan
