Akron vs. Kent State: Game Summary
Kent State opened the game with an explosive 8-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Ulatowski to Luke Floriea. Akron responded with a field goal, cutting the lead to 7-3 with ten minutes remaining in the first half.
After forcing a punt on the ensuing drive, the Zips capitalized with an eight-play, 50-yard drive capped off by a short Tahj Bullock touchdown run, bringing the score to 10-7 entering the second quarter. Akron forced a second punt and marched 78 yards in six plays before Charles Kellom broke a 13-yard run to the endzone, extending their lead to 17-7.
Kent State mustered their lone points of the second quarter with a 40-yard field goal but were met with a field goal from Akron to extend the lead to 20-10 with six minutes remaining until halftime. On the half's final drive, Akron mustered a 27-yard field goal to take a 23-10 lead into the locker rooms. Zips running back Jordon Simmons already had 104 yards on nine carries by halftime and finished with 113 yards.
Akron scored 15 unanswered points in the third quarter, taking a 38-10 lead into the final period of play. The Zips opened the second half with a nine-play, 65-yard touchdown drive capped off by an eight-yard touchdown rush from Tahj Bullock, extending their lead to 30-10. After Akron’s defense forced a punt, Ben Finley completed a pass to Jarvis Rush for a 36-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 38-10 following the two-point conversion.
Kent State responded with five minutes remaining in the final quarter, as Tommy Ulatowski completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Chrishon McCray, cutting the lead to 38-17. The Zips were held scoreless in the fourth quarter but still held on for the 38-17 win.
