Utah State Aggies cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. passed away over the weekend according to an announcement made by the university. Utah State University shared a post announcing the sudden demise of Seldon Jr on X (formerly Twitter) and extended their well wishes to his family and well-wishers.
"The Utah State University community is mourning the death of football student-athlete Andre Seldon Jr. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."
Seldon Jr. began his collegiate journey with the Michigan Wolverines in 2020 and spent two seasons with them. He was gearing up for his debut campaign with Utah State this upcoming season after spending the last two seasons with New Mexico State.
Seldon Jr. played in 28 games for New Mexico State and recorded a total of 98 tackles and two interceptions.
What happened to Andre Seldon Jr.?
According to the university, the Cache County Sheriff's Office was in search of an unidentified man who was cliff-diving at Porcupine Reservoir and did not resurface after the dive.
The Utah Department of Public Safety's dive team recovered the body at around 9:05 p.m. MT on Saturday. It was identified as Andre Seldon Jr., and they informed Utah State's officials about his death.
The program's interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling, who had a relationship with Seldon Jr. during his New Mexico State stint, released a statement expressing his grief on the passing of his cornerback.
"Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own. Having a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre's family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss," the statement said.
Utah State Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau also extended her well-wishes to Andre's family and friends during this tough time.
