A shooting happened in Sarasota, Florida, on Saturday morning and unfortunately, Auburn running back Brian Battie was a victim of the incident. He was reported to be critically injured.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site of the incident following a report of a shooting at around 3:30 a.m, according to a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office news release (per the Sarasota Herald Tribune). One person died from their injuries while four other victims were taken to local hospitals.

“Deputies who initially responded to the Tallywood Centre Plaza witnessed a large crowd with multiple shooting victims in the parking lot. Three additional victims were transported to local hospitals in Sarasota and Manatee counties.”

The one fatality reported in the incident happens to be Brian Battie's elder brother, Tommy Battie. The 24-year-old Tommy was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.


Update on Brian Battie's condition

Brian Battie is currently hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital in Sarasota. Reports indicate that Battie is able to move his hands but doctors are assesing his current level of brain functionality.

An Auburn spokesman also said the university is gathering information about the incident and is cooperating with the authorities to ensure Battie receivesthe necessary support and assistance. Law enforcement agencies are also currently investigating the shooting incident.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help assist the Battie family amid trying times. The college football world is awaiting further updates on the Auburn running back with many sending their well wishes and quick recovery messages on social media.


Brian Battie's College Career so far

Battie was a two-star recruit in the 2020 class and committed to South Florida. With the Bulls, he had a remarkable freshman year in which he had 332 rushing yards and a touchdown.

He was named a first-team All-American as a return specialist in his sophomore year by the Football Writers Association of America and the Walter Camp Foundation. He also led the team in rushing yards in 2022 with 1,185 yards and 8 touchdowns in 175 carries.

Battie spent the 2023 season at Auburn after transferring from South Florida and was the team’s primary kick returner. Over 13 games he had 51 carries for 227 yards and a touchdown along with seven catches. He also returned 28 kicks for 645 yards. He announced in January 2024 that he would be entering the transfer portal for the second time.
