Travis Hunter has been able to establish himself as one of the best players on both the offense and the defense. This week, his Colorado Buffaloes are facing the struggling Oklahoma State Cowboys in their regular season-ending game.
Early in this game, Hunter intercepted a pass from the Cowboys quarterback. This interception was considered a stunning play and was highly praised by many.
However, soon, some dissenting voices emerged who argued that it wasn't anything special. Here is a sample of how some college football fans, who weren't thrilled by the interception, reacted to this play.
These fans have said that the interception that Hunter made was incredibly easy, potentially one of the easiest that he has ever had.
"This might be the easiest interception of his career," said this fan.
"There’s no corner in the country that wouldn’t have intercepted that pass (including his own teammate who was the one actually in primary coverage on the play)," said another fan.
These fans also mentioned that this pass was thrown into triple coverage, so an interception was almost guaranteed and it was nothing to celebrate about.
"JD that ball was thrown into triple coverage. Maybe the easiest interception he’s ever had lol," said this fan.
"That’s a terrible decision by a quarterback. If he doesn’t catch it, 1 of the other 3 people in the area do," said another fan.
"The QB literally threw it into triple coverage... LMAO," said a third fan.
Finally, these fans have cast doubts on the abilities of Travis Hunter due to the teams he is playing against.
"It’s 0-8 in conference play Oklahoma state. Wouldn’t it be nice if they played an actual quality opponent?" Said this fan.
"For the 20 millionth time. They play jv teams," said another fan.
Was this a good interception from Travis Hunter?
The interception by Hunter on the pass by Cowboys quarterback Maealiuaki Smith led to the first score of the game for the Buffaloes. On the following drive, Micah Welch found the endzone for a one-yard rushing touchdown.
However, as the fans responded on social media, this interception was not a surprise. This is nothing to do with the abilities of Travis Hunter but with the quarterback.
Maealiuaki Smith is a freshman quarterback who is playing in only his fourth game. In two of those, he has thrown an interception. Additionally, he made the rookie mistake of throwing into triple coverage. Doing this means that it is likely that the pass is going to be intercepted.
Add in the fact that the Oklahoma State Cowboys (who were predicted to be in the race for the Big 12 championship at the beginning of the season) are 0-8 in conference play. On top of that, they had a long injury list going into the game, and it is no surprise that this interception happened.
It was just a coincidence that Travis Hunter caught the ball.
