Colorado Buffaloes cornerback and wide receiver Travis Hunter said that CU is one of the toughest places to play college football while shooting images for the EA Sports College Football 25 video game. Hunter will appear alongside Michigan Wolverines running back Donovan Edwards and Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers on the game's cover.
"Tough places to play?" Hunter said. "I'll probably say Colorado is always packed out, and there's a lot of people and a lot of fans screaming. You know, it gets a little hectic, but it's good, and it's fun to play there."
The Colorado Buffaloes play at 50,000-seat Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado. The stadium, a horseshoe located at the foot of the Rockies, has been known for its unique atmosphere, which can be loud and intimidating for opponents. The atmosphere can also have an effect on the Buffaloes, who will hope to please their passionate fans. The school has had just one winning season since 2002.
The atmosphere increased after the arrival of coach Deion Sanders last season. Sanders brought the program into the national spotlight.
Darian Hagan, the quarterback of CU's 1990 national championship team, spoke about Folsom Field in the Denver Post. Hagan, who had been a coach or administrator at the school since 2005 through 2023, is now a running backs coach at San Diego State.
"It’s a place that gets loud when the fans are behind you, and this year, with the fans behind the team, it’s been rockin'. … I’d say it’s the No. 1 college stadium in the country — the atmosphere, the scenery, the mascot and now Coach Prime. It’s a quadruple effect.”
While Deion Sanders has been able to win fans over, and they are rewarding the players by creating an electric and intimidating atmosphere, can the atmosphere translate into wins on the field?
The Colorado Buffaloes' play at home under Deion Sanders
The Colorado Buffaloes have been able to create a strong home atmosphere. But this has not been able to translate into many wins.
Two of the Buffaloes' four wins last season came at home: back-to-back victories over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Week 2 and a double-overtime win against the rival Colorado State Rams.
While the Buffaloes lost the rest of their home games, these games were lost by less than eight points. That was decidedly different compared to CU's large losses CU on the road.
The stronger play at home was not surprising. Buffaloes fans have made Folsom Field an intimidating place, and this may have affected the opposition.
For the Buffaloes to succeed in the Big 12, they'll need to pair strong players who will fight for every yard with a passionate fanbase who will create the right atmosphere.
