The Ole Miss Rebels under coach Lane Kiffin came into the current season with huge expectations after a stellar transfer portal. The Rebels reinforced their standing in the Southeastern Conference and in the College Football Playoff landscape with a dominant 28-10 win over coach Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs.

In Week 13 of college football action though, Kiffin's team fell to a demoralizing 24-17 loss to embattled coach Billy Napier's Florida Gators. This, in all likelihood, ends the Rebels' dreams of making the expanded College Football Playoff as a three-loss team.

Despite going 24-of-41 for 323 yards, talented Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart threw a costly interception with 1:32 remaining, throwing the ball into triple coverage. He followed it up by throwing a second interception to Florida's Bryce Thornton, ending the game as a contest.

After the game, Ole Miss fans on X showed their displeasure at the coaching by Lane Kiffin.

Some fans placed the blame for the loss squarely on Kiffin.

"And was coached really stupid today," one fan tweeted.
"stop saying ole miss state facts. FAKE NEWS. LANE KIFFIN is a douche SPEAK TRUTH," another fan tweeted.
"According to Kiffin they had one of the best weeks of practice," one fan tweeted.

Lane Kiffin rues a season of near misses

This season, the Ole Miss Rebels under coach Lane Kiffin have had a couple of narrow losses which have needled their fans. They lost 20-17 to the Kentucky Wildcats at home on September 28, before losing 29-26 to the LSU Tigers in Death Valley in a night game in overtime, on Oct. 12.

The loss to the Florida Gators effectively ends any chance that the Rebels had of making the Southeastern Conference's championship game.

During his weekly news conference, Kiffin caused controversy with his comments about teams wanting to miss conference championship games to increase their playoff chances.

“I’ve talked to other coaches, so I’ll just kind of give you the feeling from some other coaches that they don’t want to be in it,” Lane Kiffin said. “You know, the reward to get a bye versus the risk to get knocked out completely, that’s a, that’s a pretty big, that’s a really big risk.
"The SEC is different," Kiffin said. "I ain't saying that because I'm here. I see these other coaches in the conference talk about the ACC top to bottom and all that. It ain't rocket science when you watch football, OK? And during the bye, I watched football and other conferences. The SEC is different."

Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels will only have the Egg Bowl game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Oxford to look forward to and whichever bowl invitation the Rebels receive. It will end what will feel like an underwhelming season of close shaves after all the preseason hype.
