Sam Leavitt and Arizona State won the Big 12 championship in 2024 after having been projected to finish last in the conference. The Sun Devils then advanced to the college football playoff, where they narrowly lost a double-overtime game to Texas in the Peach Bowl.

Now, Leavitt is aiming even higher. In an interview with On3’s Pete Nakos on Thursday, the quarterback shared his goals for the upcoming season.

“I have the national championship and the 2025 Heisman as my goals,” Leavitt said. “But I don’t like to look at things from a big perspective all the time. Just day-to-day getting better.”

However, some fans were not too keen on Sam Leavitt’s comment, doubting Arizona State’s ability to compete with other elite programs.

“Has there ever been a more delusional program?” one fan said.
"Should have came to TN then bud,” another fan said.

Here are some more reactions from fans.

“Is he aware that Texas Tech exists? Lol,” one fan said.

"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂” another fan said.

Leavitt isn’t seen as a top Heisman Trophy contender yet, but he and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson are still one of the most dangerous duos returning this year. In 2024, Leavitt passed for 2,885 yards with 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He also added five rushing touchdowns for 443 yards. Tyson was his go-to receiver, finishing with 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Sam Leavitt got even better as the season went on, taking the Sun Devils on an eight-game win streak leading up to the Peach Bowl. Because of how his season played out, some fans believe he can achieve his goals.

“I know his breakout year last year but this kid is a STUD. He’s one of my fav QB prospects,” a fan said.
“He can do it too,” another fan said.

Kenny Dillingham on Sam Leavitt

With the season just a couple of months away, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham is placing his full trust in his quarterback. On May 30, Dillingham joined Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd for a conversation. Cowherd brought up Sam Leavitt and asked how Dillingham plans to coach him through the upcoming season.

"A big reason for our success was we opened the playbook up gradually throughout the season as Sam got better, more comfortable,” Dillingham said. “JT (Jordyn Tyson), I mean there's multiple players that went into it, but obviously your quarterback is a big piece.
"And I think this year, it's going to be how can we control early downs? I think the biggest sign of a quarterback is if you lean on him controlling early down quick passing game. If your quarterback can take control of first and second down in-rhythm passing game, and you have enough confidence in him - that's when a quarterback really takes control."
