The Southeastern Conference had a bad Week 13 that has put many team's playoff hopes in jeopardy. There are now only three teams in the playoff bracket with one game of the regular season left for all teams. ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum spoke about the possible complications for the conference on Wednesday.
"My contract does not allow me to say the SEC is in trouble, but I’m going to violate it right here," Finebaum said. "The SEC is in very big trouble, and it really is their own fault. Alabama did it to themselves on Saturday, literally laying the biggest egg of the entire season, losing 24-3 against a five loss team. And then, of course, Ole Miss did it as well.
"But most people are gravitating to the Alabama story today, because even after that, people in Alabama, as you know Matt, there’s still a chance today. There’s not much of a chance at all."
Alabama and Ole Miss were the biggest losers in the conference on Saturday. Both teams were well-positioned to make the playoffs but had disastrous losses that seriously hurt their playoff hopes.
No. 13-ranked Alabama (8-3) lost 24-3 to Oklahoma. No. 14-ranked Ole Miss lost 24-17 to Florida after previously defeating No. 7-ranked Georgia 28-10.
Analyst Heather Dinich speaks about the SEC's issues ahead of Week 14
Heather Dinich was also on ESPN on Wednesday and spoke about the problems the SEC is facing. Specifically, she spoke about the problem with the upcoming Texas vs. Texas A&M matchup.
"Well, Matt, I think that the SEC is in big trouble," Dinich said. "Just a week ago, there were five teams in the College Football Playoff bracket, and now it’s down to three: Texas, Tennessee and Georgia.
"And the Texas-Texas A&M game is now going to feature a team, the Aggies, that are ranked 20th by the selection committee, and a three loss team that could go win the SEC. So I think when you look at the big picture with Alabama and Ole Miss playing themselves out, that was the big takeaway."
Alabama needs a win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl to keep its playoff hopes alive, but it does not guarantee anything. If Texas beats Texas A&M, it will have a rematch with Georgia for the championship. However, if the Longhorns lose, the Aggies would play Georgia in the championship and there could be a three-loss team in the playoffs.
