Coach Ryan Day and the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes are set to host the Michigan Wolverines in the regular season finale on Saturday. The Buckeyes (10-1) head into the matchup against the Wolverines (6-5) as big favorites.
However, a storyline heading into the game is related to Day's record against Michigan. Despite his excellent record since becoming the Ohio State head coach, he has struggled against the Wolverines. So, while the Buckeyes are big favorites, there is concern among the fan base that they could lose this game.
Analyst Brady Quinn spoke about what Day and his squad are facing on Big Noon Kickoff on Saturday morning. He talked about the stakes of the game and what it could mean if they lose.
"My storyline for this matchup, you know this better than anyone else, it's all about Ryan Day," Quinn said. "This is arguably the biggest game in his career because we know what happens when you don't win this rivalry enough. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio. I grew up in the Jon Cooper era. That ultimately ended up being his demise.
"So, it's been five years in the making. And Ryan Day has put together one of the best careers for a head coach ever. He's 66 and 9. It's just of those nine losses, three have come to that team up North. And that's what's on the line. It's what happens moving forward if the Buckeyes look to be the better team."
Quinn concluded his remark by saying:
"If it doesn't happen today, what happens next. You've got an athletic director that's not responsible for hiring him. So, a lot of questions would emerge from today's matchup."
Ryan Day and Ohio State need to win to make the Big 10 championship game
The objective is clear for the Buckeyes and Ryan Day. They need to win against Michigan on Saturday to secure their spot in the Big 10 championship game.
The No. 1-ranked Oregon has already secured its spot and will face one of Ohio State, Indiana or Penn State. Depending on the results on Saturday, any of those teams could earn a spot in the Big 10 championship game.
Fortunately for Ohio State, a win will secure a spot in the big game. All three teams have one conference loss, but the Buckeyes have the tiebreaker over both teams.
As a result, if they win, they will face off with Oregon for the championship. However, if they lose, they will need to rely on both Indiana and Penn State losing their games to make it to the summit clash.
