Joey McGuire has been consistent with his stats at Texas Tech since he joined the Red Raiders as coach in 2022. The Big 12 powerhouse is slowly trying to make its mark in the conference, with the competition more intense following Deion Sanders’ arrival at Boulder.
Texas Tech general manager James Blanchard recently spoke with college football analyst Adam Brenneman. He spilled the beans on the internal operations in navigating through NIL and the revenue sharing model. It came as college football is going through a massive change with the House vs. NCAA's $2.8 billion settlement.
Blanchard said the NIL allocation and revenue sharing of the program are similar to how things work in the NFL. In the pro league, it's more about the percentages given to the players based on their positions. Similarly, the Red Raiders have a cap fixed based on the positions and how they play.

“I think you teeter totter on both ends," Blanchard said on Friday (09:00), via "Next Up." "You know, you know, I was in the NFL, Carolina Panthers. Spent a lot of time around our team as a salary cap guy. So, you know, in the NFL, just historically, there are percentages that are allocated to position groups.
“And then, man, those percentages allocated per position, you know, starter, backup, so forth. So I think that's like a baseline. And then, man, as you go from there, depending on who the player is, high school or poor man, you allocate more or less, depending on how much he's valued.”
James Blanchard shares how he joined the program with Joey McGuire
James Blanchard and Joey McGuire took the reins at Texas Tech in 2022 after a brief stint at Baylor. While speaking to college football analyst Adam Brenneman on Friday, the general manager mentioned that it was McGuire who asked him whether he wanted to make a transition, and an offer from Texas Tech was in the bag.
It was a major career upgrade for the duo since Blanchard said that McGuire was “uber focused” in winning the Big 12 championship at Baylor. The Red Raiders proved to be a bigger opportunity, enjoying a passionate fan base and major NIL backing.
Over the last three years, they have met the expectations with a consistent record of 8-5 (5-4), 7-6 (5-4) and 8-5 (6-3) seasons. Expect nothing less than a 9+ wins for McGuire and his team in 2025.
