Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck made history during their game with the UMass Minutemen at the weekend.
During the first half of the game against the nonconference opponent, Beck threw for touchdowns. The last time someone did this was Tua Tagovalioa in 2019 when he was quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
These four touchdowns came from the opening four drives from Beck. He opened his account with a 17-yard pass to Oscar Delph. This was followed by touchdown passes to Cash Jones, Dominic Lovett and Arian Smith.
However, it was not just the Bulldogs whose offense found the endzone in this game. The Minutemen, who nobody expected to do much in the game, found the endzone twice in the first half.
This meant that despite Beck throwing four touchdowns, his Bulldogs' team went into the locker room at halftime with a two-touchdown lead at 28–14.
Revisiting the last time four touchdowns were scored in first half
Carson Beck's achievement of four touchdowns in the first half isn't the first of its kind. The last time this feat was achieved was in 2019.
The last person to achieve this feat was current Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovalioa when he was in college with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
His four touchdowns occurred in the Crimson Tide's game against Southern Mississippi. Tua found Henry Ruggs, Najee Harris and Jerry Judy for the touchdown passes. All three have gone on to have successful careers in the NFL.
Speaking about his offense after the game, then coach Nick Saban said:
"They're good, they're really good. They're going to be one of the best, if not the best, offenses in college football with that type of exploding. The quarterback, I mean he just doesn't make a bad throw."
The Crimson Tide looked like the Tagovalioa-led offense would be enough to take them to another national championship game. However, a couple of weeks later, Bama met the Joe Burrow-led LSU Tigers and played in a game that has been described as "The Game of the Century."
Despite throwing for 418 yards and four touchdowns in the game, Tagovalioa could not steer his Crimson Tide team to victory, losing the game 46–41.
Tagovalioa went on to have several successful seasons with the Miami Dolphins, scoring numerous touchdowns in a game.
