Bo Schembechler is the winningest coach in Michigan Wolverines history. Schembechler, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993, passed away in 2006. The long-time Wolverines head coach found himself in controversy posthumously for his role in the cover-up of a sexual assault scandal.

The Schembechler name has now once again been the center of a controversial scandal involving the Wolverines football team. This time, however, Glenn 'Shemy' Schembechler, Bo's only biological child, is the focus of the controversy. Three days after being hired as Michigan's assistant director of football recruiting, Glenn was forced to resign due to controversial likes on Twitter.

Take a look at the controversy surrounding the Schembechlers below.

Why did Glenn 'Shemy' Schembechler resign from the Michigan Wolverines?

When Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh made the decision to hire Glenn 'Shemy' Schembechler as the assistant director of football recruiting, many believed his last name helped him land the job. After all, Harbaugh spent five years on the Wolverines roster under Bo Schembechler.

Still, Shemy seemed qualified enough for the position. While he had not worked as a college football recruiter, he was a long-time scout in the NFL. The backlash of the hiring led fans to scour through his social media in which it was revealed that he has a history of liking offensive tweets.

Several of the tweets that were liked by the younger Schembechler suggested that Jim Crow and slavery had a positive effect on the black community.

Schembechler, or someone working on his behalf, attempted damage control by removing the like from nearly 2000 tweets. However, that reportedly only went back as far as January.

He eventually deleted his account with more than 20,000 liked tweets. On Saturday, Schembechler stepped down from the Wolverines program. Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel released a statement, distancing the university from the tweets.

What posthumous controversy arose regarding Bo Schembechler?

Bo Schembechler had a legendary career as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Despite never winning a national championship, Schembechler remains the winningest coach in Wolverines history. He retired with a 194-48-5 record as Michigan's head coach and a 234-65-8 record overall.

The College Football Hall of Famer found himself in controversy in 2018, 12 years after he passed away. University of Michigan doctor Robert Anderson, who passed away in 2008, was accused of sexual assault by over 600 former student athletes. One unnamed former Wolverines player alleged that Schembechler told him to toughen up after reporting that Anderson had inappropriately fondled him.

Matt Schembechler, Bo's adopted son from his wife's previous marriage, claimed that he was a victim of Anderson's at the age of 10 in the 1960s. He claimed that his mother reported the incident to Wolverines athletic director Don Canham. However, the legendary coach convinced Canham to allow Anderson to keep his job.

Furthermore, he claimed that upon reporting the incident to his father, he was punched. Glenn 'Shemy' Schembechler, Bo's only biological child, denied his father having any knowledge of the incident, claiming that he would have done something.
