Coach Mike Locksley's Maryland Terrapins are set to take on the Northwestern Wildcats in Week 7 of college football action. The game, which will feature two winless Big Ten teams, will take place on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
Billy Edwards Jr. is the team's starting quarterback and has started all games. But will he continue?
Will Billy Edwards Jr. continue to start in Week 7 against Northwestern?
Yes, barring any injury and setbacks, there's no reason to move on from Billy Edwards as the starting quarterback of the program. After spending two seasons with the Terrapins, where he received fringe action now and then, Mike Locksley gave the junior quarterback his chance to shine.
Waiting behind Edwards in the Terrapins quarterback room are redshirt sophomores Cameron Edge and MJ Morris, redshirt freshman Champ Long and redshirt sophomore Jayden Sauray.
How has Billy Edwards Jr. performed this season?
Freshman Billy Edwards was a dual-threat quarterback, but with time, he has molded his game into a pass-heavy signal-caller. So much so that this season, he has only recorded 36 rushing yards with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, in passing, he has thrown for over 1,000 (1,444) yards already with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. He has done it at a 72.3% pass completion rate.
His best game of the season came against the Villanova Wildcats, where he led the Terrapins to a 38-20 win. Billy Edwards threw a season-high 328 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He has one more game with over 300 yards this season.
Ahead of the game against the Terrapins, Mike Locksley is all but sure his quarterback can get them back to winning ways following an open week.
“When you talk about grabbing every opportunity, there’s no player that exemplifies that more to me than what Billy Edwards has done for us,” Locksley said in a press conference on Wednesday. “He’s not just probably one of the best QBs in our league right now, but one of the best QBs in the country.”
Even the oddsmakers believe in the offense of the Terrapins under Billy Edwards. They project them to win the game with over a 10-point margin.
