The coaches poll for Week 14 of the college football season has been released. This is the top 25 teams decided by the coaches of all teams and has no impact on the AP Poll and the College Football Playoff Poll (the latter is the important one at this point of the season).
The coaches poll ranks the Oregon Ducks as the best team in the country, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes and then the Texas Longhorns.
As one would expect with any poll or ranking, there is great disagreement over the placement and even the presence of certain teams. Fans took to social media to give vent to their opinions. Here are a few of the reactions:
These fans are surprised that Penn State is ranked higher than Notre Dame.
"Penn state over ND is absurd man," said this fan.
"Not sure CFP Committee will keep Penn State over ND…," said another fan.
These fans have spoken about the position of the Georgia Bulldogs:
"Could have sworn Georgia stomped out Texas at home," said this fan.
"Georgia would phuck up ND and Penn State….," said another fan.
"Coaches must’ve missed the UGA games against Ole Miss and Bama. Two teams who just lost to UF and SHUT OUT BY OU!!! Give me a f**king break," said a third fan.
"Georgia jumping to 6 because 'sec,'" said this fan.
Finally, these users have spoken about the SMU Mustangs' position in the rankings.
"Plz plz explain Miami ahead of SMU. SMU lost by last second's FG to a ranked team. Miami lost to unranked team and only made it close with a late TD. Ridiculous. Rankings play fav bc fav bring money. Load of crap," said this fan.
"Good for smu honestly," said another fan.
Why may fans be reacting to the positions of Georgia and Notre Dame?
The coaches poll, as many other such excercises, causes a debate among college football fans. This week, the main source of debate has come from the position of the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs are the sixth-ranked team and come into the week with a 9-2 (6-2 SEC) record. However, they are ranked below the Texas Longhorns, whom they were able to easily defeat.
Normally, a two-loss team should not be around the many one-loss teams in a poll. But the Bulldogs have already sealed their spot in the SEC Championship game, and their two defeats came against conference opponents in close games.
Another source of debate may come from the position of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They have been nearly perfect this season and are destined for a spot in the CFP.
However, they were defeated by the non-conference (and weaker) Northern Illinois Huskies, while the Indiana Hoosiers, who are ranked at No. 10 with one loss, were defeated by the stronger Ohio State Buckeyes.
