Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers surprised many fans when he decided to return to Austin for an extra year after being projected as one of the top picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Ewers reasserted himself as Texas' QB1 over Arch Manning and picked up where he left off, leading the Longhorns to a 10-1 (6-1 Southeastern Conference) season.
In Week 13, a hobbled Ewers led the Longhorns to a comfortable 31-14 win over the Kentucky Wildcats, registering 191 yards on 64.5% completion and two touchdowns.
On Friday, 247Sports analyst Chip Brown revealed that Ewers is expected to enter the 2025 NFL draft.
"I spoke to two sources close to Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers on Wednesday night who said they expect Ewers to enter the 2025 NFL draft after this season, meaning Saturday's game against Kentucky (2:30 p.m., ABC) would be Ewers' last regular season home game as a Longhorn," Brown wrote.
Earlier in the season, ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. projected Ewers as a first round pick and possibly the first quarterback off the board ahead of Colorado Buffaloes' Shedeur Sanders and Miami Hurricanes' Cam Ward.
During his weekly news conference, Ewers, who still has a year of eligibility remaining, was evasive about whether the clash against Kentucky would be his final home game before departing for the NFL.
“Who knows?" Ewers said on Monday. "I'm just trying to win this week. That’s the fun part about playing at a program like this. Being able to sit back and just understand the pride and tradition that comes with playing here. I try to fully embody and experience as many moments as I can.”
Quinn Ewers draft future questioned
In his weekly column, CBS Sports draft expert Josh Edwards questioned whether Quinn Ewers was ready to be a first round pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
"Ewers has shown more ownership of the offense and is making quicker decisions, but examples of poor decision-making are still too common," Edwards wrote.
"As a longtime supporter of his talent, I still have hope that he can reach that first round platform, but the decision-making is not yet where it needs to be. Could a desperate team take him in the first round? Absolutely. But that does not mean he is a first round talent right now."
Ewers could boost his draft stock with a stellar finish to the season with the Texas Longhorns in prime position to thrive in the postseason.
