Rice drew first blood in this game, capitalizing on an interception with a 25-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead over the Tigers. The Owls forced a second straight interception and capitalized with a second field goal to take a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After an exchange of punts, Memphis marched 77 yards in 12 plays and punched in a touchdown to take a 7-6 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half. Memphis and Rice exchanged touchdown scores in the next three drives, with the Tigers taking a 14-13 lead.

With the final seconds of the first half winding down, Memphis mustered a 42-yard field goal to take a 17-13 lead into the locker rooms.
After a scoreless third quarter, Memphis scored the first points of the second half with a 10-play, 92-yard touchdown drive to extend their lead to 24-13 with under 12 minutes left to play. The Tigers kicked a 42-yard field goal with under five minutes remaining, extending their lead to 27-13.
Rice responded with an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to cut the lead to 27-20 with under two minutes left. Memphis ran out the clock, clinching their 27-20 win and avoiding an upset.
