There’s been a lot of rumors about SEC expansion in the last couple of months. This is mostly regarding the possibility of bringing in Florida State and Clemson from the ACC. However, Commissioner Greg Sankey put that to bed during the SEC media days in Dallas on Monday.

Sankey was asked how closely he is monitoring the chaotic situation in the ACC while addressing the media on Monday. The commissioner made it known that while he pays attention to the situation within the league, he is only focused on the 16 teams within his conference.

“I pay attention. As I said, we're focused on our 16. I've said before at media days, I'm not a recruiter,” Greg Sankey said regarding SEC expansion. "My job is to make sure we meet the standard of excellence that we have for ourselves on a daily basis.

“I don't spend an enormous amount of my time thinking about it. I certainly don't spend any time engaged in that recruiting activity because we're focused on our 16, and I want to be respectful of the difficulty that's currently faced with that issue.”

Greg Sankey shuts the door on an SEC Expansion

After completing the process of adding Texas and Oklahoma to the conference this offseason, an SEC expansion doesn't seem like happening soon. Greg Sankey reiterated during the SEC media days in Dallas that the conference is rather focused on its current members.

“Our focus is on our 16 members,” Greg Sankey explained on the conference membership. “I have a responsibility to pay attention, and I'm certainly not going to fuel speculation on what happens next. We can certainly remain at 16 for a long, long time and be incredibly successful.”

This pretty much makes the probability of adding Florida State and Clemson anytime soon to the conference very low. While still dealing with different legal battles with the ACC, the Tigers and the Seminoles have another pending problem of securing a good landing spot.

Florida State and Clemson to Big 12 gaining momentum

With the probability of an SEC expansion very low and the Big Ten reportedly not open to adding Clemson and Florida State, the Big 12 comes as the only likely option for the two. In the last couple of days, the probability of a move to the conference has grown significantly.

College football insider Greg Swaim reports that the Big 12 has held discussions with the two schools via a third party and both are confident of sealing a deal. The two now have to find their way out of the ACC as that remains a stumbling block.
