Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders has led the Buffaloes to an unprecedented 8-3 record and their first bowl-eligibility in eight years. Sanders was on the end of a 37-21 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks in Week 13 on Saturday, despite tallying 266 yards and three touchdowns in a game that complicated the Buffs' chances of making the Big 12 championship game.
Despite his stellar form, Sanders has played second fiddle to Colorado teammate and Heisman Trophy-contending two-way star Travis Hunter, the outright favorite for the prestigious accolade.
After Week 13 action, Shedeur has registered 3,222 passing yards on 72.9% completion, resulting in 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He is currently ranked No. 8 (+7500) in the list of Heisman favorites, according to Fox Sports.
Shedeur Sanders has a controversial week
In the first half of the game against Kansas on Saturday, Shedeur Sanders was chopped down with a late tackle on the knees by Jayhawks defensive end Dean Miller. The tackle was widely criticized by fans on social media as a potential leg-breaker.
In the third quarter, Sanders got into a scuffle with Miller and appeared to shove the head official for a missed call. Fox Sports rules analyst Mike Pereira outlined the case for the Buffs quarterback to have merited an ejection for his actions.
"There's no question that he (Shedeur Sanders) does," Pereira said. "I get why he's upset because people are almost climbing over him after he was down. But, the officials can use their hands all they want to try and keep order. But you cannot come back as a player. You cannot come back and push an official.
"In the chaos the officials don't see it, but he's lucky he wasn't ejected from the game."
During his postgame news conference, the maverick Colorado quarterback appeared to disagree with his father and Colorado coach Deion Sanders' comments about the team growing complacent and becoming overconfident after a run of good form accounting for the loss.
“Personally, I’m just an overconfident person myself,” Shedeur Sanders said. “So I can’t spot that on anybody else and say they’re overconfident. I’m not sure. It was really…we all did our job preparing and doing that, so whatever people did in their personal side, like mentally, you won’t be able to know, we won’t be able to know.
“I’m focused on plenty of other things than how somebody is thinking at all times.”
According to ESPN's Mel Kiper, Shedeur Sanders will be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL draft, and he has already shown that there will be moments of controversy mixed with brilliance on the gridiron.
