Kalen DeBoer led No. 7 Alabama to another disappointing loss on Saturday against Oklahoma. The Crimson Tide were defeated 24-3 by the Sooner in Norman, in what was a setback in the team’s pursuit of the SEC championship game and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Of all the three defeats Alabama has suffered under DeBoer this season, this appears to be the most disappointing. The Crimson Tide failed to score a touchdown in the game, while quarterback Jalen Milroe threw two interceptions, which both eventually led to a touchdown.
The Saturday loss to Oklahoma has led to widespread criticism of DeBoer by Alabama fans. The former Washington coach replaced legendary Nick Saban during the offseason but hasn't proven to be successful enough till now to fill the big shoes. Here's a look at some of the reactions online:
Other critical comments of DeBoer online went like this:
"Kalen DeBoer get your f**king team ready to play on the road or get the f**k out of Tuscaloosa," a fan wrote.
"Kalen DeBoer had the chance to build a dynasty in the PNW. And now he’s going to get chased out of town in Tuscaloosa," another fan wrote.
"I'm officially done with Alabama until Kalen DeBoer and Jalen Milroe is gone sh*t it is painful to my eyes take his a*s out the game and put a passer in like wtf," another fan wrote.
Kalen DeBoer reacts to Oklahoma defeat
After falling to Vanderbilt and Tennessee earlier in the season, the game against Oklahoma marks Kalen DeBoer’s third loss this campaign, reducing Tuscaloosa fans’ confidence in him. The coach offered his insight into the loss in his postgame press conference in Norman.
“We have to play better, we have to be better in all ways,” DeBoer said. “And some simple uncharacteristic things that happened early in the game, where we didn’t get the momentum on our side. It really comes down to the turnovers, it kind of changed the momentum of the game.
“Turnovers were going to be key, we said that coming in. We knew taking the ball off them like we did early was going to be big. In the end, it flipped the other way. We turned over the ball.”
It’s the first game under DeBoer that Alabama has failed to score a touchdown in. The Crimson Tide were limited to a field goal converted by Graham Nicholson from 22 yards in the first quarter of the encounter.
Kalen DeBoer commends Oklahoma
Alabama has been impressive on the field since the loss to Tennessee in Week 8. They went on to record a dominant win against Missouri, LSU and Mercer. However, the Crimson Tide were completely outclassed by Oklahoma on Saturday, drawing Kalen DeBoer’s praise.
“Credit to them. They did a nice job with their run game, staying on the field early, in the first half, especially. I thought there were some things that we continued to tweak and adjust to do a better job against it and what they were doing there. Obviously, the game got away from us in the middle of the third quarter there.”
Alabama will now hope things turn out in its favor regarding the College Football Playoff after missing out on the SEC championship game. The playoffs' chances are now very slim but not totally over. More three-loss teams in the top 15 can get them in if they defeat Auburn.
