No. 8 Georgia (8-2, 6-2 SEC) welcomed UMass (2-8) to Athens on Saturday in what was expected to be a lopsided contest. The Bulldogs rounded up their conference play with a 31-17 win over Tennessee in Week 12, placing them in the frame for the SEC championship game.
Unsurprisingly, Georgia entered this game as an overwhelming favorite. Adding to the Bulldogs' advantage, UMass made the unexpected decision to fire its head coach earlier this week, further tilting the scales in Georgia's favor for what already seemed like a one-sided matchup.
The Bulldogs needed to stage a commanding win over the Minutemen to increase their chances of making the College Football Playoff. A dominant performance was crucial to bolstering their case for a higher seeding after ending as No. 11 in the latest ranking.
