The Heisman Trophy race is officially on with only a week of regular season play yet. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders has gained some attention, but not as much as Colorado Buffaloes teammate Travis Hunter.

Cleveland Browns quarterback and former Heisman winner Jameis Winston appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Wednesday, giving his opinion on who he thinks should win the award.

"As a quarterback, I go for quarterbacks," Winston said.

Winston said he'd pick Shedeur Sanders over Travis Hunter.

"You know the thing I like about Travis Hunter more than his skill on the field is his character," Winston said. "Who he is off the field, not going to parties, not going to anything that isn't required for him to be a star athlete. I would probably pick Shedeur over him. I'm just saying, Shedeur is the one who is giving him these opportunities."

Part of the reason Jameis Winston thinks Sanders is not getting as much Heisman attention as Travis Hunter is he is under the shadow of his father, head coach Deion Sanders.

"He has been leading under the shadow of his father, of who his father is. Remaining poised, remaining consistent, and just staying out there and doing his job. That's more fun to watch from a quarterback perspective than to see the god given abilities that Travis Hunter has," Winston said.

Jameis Winston thinks what Shedeur Sanders has done to legitimize Colorado as a program is impressive

Part of the reason Jameis Winston likes Shedeur Sanders is he remembers the issues Colorado used to have. He believes Shedeur has been a big part in taking the program to new heights.

"I think what he is doing in that conference, is more electrifying because I remember growing up and watching Colorado," Winston said. "As a quarterback, for you to change the whole culture of your team and to go out there and have great games, one game after a time, despite the outcome of the game.
"Despite the outcome of the game, Shedeur Sanders is playing some of the most elite football I've seen from a college perspective. Since that kid has been playing for his dad's team in high school, they have been doubting that kid."

Winston, a quarterback himself, believes that the position is valuable and Travis Hunter would not be able to do what he has done without Sanders.
