The Vanderbilt Commodores had an interesting season with impressive wins, but a few equally disappointing losses. The Commodores (6-5) burst onto the scene early in October with a 40-35 win over No. 7 Alabama. That win earned the Commodores respect, getting ranked on the AP Top 25 Poll a few times this season.
However, they have suffered several disappointing losses, notably a 24-17 setback to LSU on Saturday. The Commodores have lost three of their last four games and are no longer in contention for the playoffs. However, there should still be a bowl game to look forward to.
Vanderbilt bowl projections 2024
A few weeks ago, the Commodores were considered a potential dark horse playoff contender. However, that is no longer the case. They were unable to replicate their success against Alabama when facing other ranked teams, suffering a 27-24 loss to No. 3-ranked Texas and a 28-7 loss to No. 19-ranked South Carolina.
However, they have eclipsed the six-win minimum to qualify for a bowl game. Additionally, since the Commodores had a high-profile win over Alabama this season, there is a higher chance they will be selected.
What bowl game will Vanderbilt play in?
Several bowl games can be chosen from the pool of non-playoff SEC teams. So, there are a few options for Vanderbilt. However, higher-profile non-playoff SEC teams like Alabama and Ole Miss are more likely to be selected for the bigger games like the Citrus Bowl.
As a result, the Commodores are more likely to play in a lower-profile bowl game. CBS Sports projects that they will play in the Birmingham Bowl. The projections have them playing against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
However, any number of teams could be chosen as Vanderbilt's opponent. The entire pool of qualified teams is eligible to play in the Birmingham Bowl.
Other possible bowl games for the Commodores to compete in include the Gasparilla Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Music City Bowl and ReliaQuest Bowl.
