Ohio State quarterback Will Howard led the Buckeyes to a dominant 38-15 win over the previously unbeaten Indiana Hoosiers in Week 13 of college football action. Howard went 22-of-26 for 201 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
With the score safe, Howard was involved in a moment of controversy when he mimicked stubbing out a cigarette and mouthing "Google that" on the sidelines. It appeared to be a clear shot at Indiana coach Curt Cignetti, who said 'I win, Google me" during his introductory press conference.
The outspoken Cignetti also famously taunted the Buckeyes during a Hoosiers basketball match in December last year after he had been appointed the Indiana coach.
"I've never taken a backseat to anybody and don't plan to start now. Purdue sucks, so does Michigan and Ohio State," Cignetti said.
Ohio State also trolled Cignetti by putting up a graphic stating "Buckeyes win, Google it!".
During his postgame news conference, Howard said the gesture toward Curt Cignetti was not intended to be disrespectful and that he was just having some fun.
"I just try to say we don't listen to the stuff on social media, but we hear it, man," Howard said. "I was just having some fun with it. I have a lot of respect for those guys, man. What coach Cignetti has done over there, he's done a heck of a job. The Buckeyes are here and the Buckeyes won. You can Google that."
Will Howard key to Ohio State's CFP chances
Will Howard transferred to Columbus from the Kansas State Wildcats via the transfer portal and has quickly made himself integral to coach Ryan Day's team. He has tallied 2,484 yards on 72.9% completion, resulting in 24 touchdowns and five interceptions.
On ESPN's "College GameDay," Ohio State coach Ryan Day highlighted the importance of Howard.
“This game is won with players. … He (Howard) can get you into the right play, he can make adjustments in game,” Day said.
“There's going to be momentum swings in a game. Get everybody on the same page, get back out on the field, and have the resilience like he did in the Penn State game to maybe have something go sideways, and get back down and get us in the end zone,” Day added.
The win against the Indiana Hoosiers puts Ohio State in pole position to clinch a place in the Big Ten championship game. Howard will be key to any chance the Buckeyes have of making the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.
