The Ohio State HC Ryan Dyan confirmed at Tuesday's Big Ten Media Days that TC Caffey is out of the season because of an injury, which raises the question if Caleb Downs will take on the role of a running back this CFB season. After confirming Caffey's playing status, the coach said Down is a talented piece for the team but will start out as a safety, as per Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors."Ryan Day confirmed that TC Caffey’s injury is season-ending. He said again that he thinks Caleb Downs has the talent that he could play running back at Ohio State, but Downs will start out playing safety and go from there."Ryan Day also said that Brandon Inniss will be another player who could work out of the backfield if the team feels the need.TC Caffey joined the Buckeyes squad as a walk-on in 2022 and could play for only two games that season. An ACL tear put his 2022 and 2023 season on hold.Ryan Day said that Caleb Downs can play a Travis Hunter-like role for the team this seasonThe Ohio Buckeyes have powerful running backs in veterans TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins but if Caleb Downs joins them, he can perform the role that Colorado star Travis Hunter plays for the Buffs.Hunter is a prolific receiver and a versatile cornerback, thus, making him a highly sought-after two-way star. If Ryan can change his decision, he can see the Alabama transfer play a two-way role for the Ohio State Buckeyes this season. It was reported by Adam King that the head coach of the team had Downs go through running back drills.Despite not making any decision yet, there is a possibility that the team ends up playing Downs in the position of a running back.
