Carson Beck was Stetson Bennett's backup for two years and had front-row seats as Bennett led the Georgia Bulldogs to consecutive national football championships. Bennett was the ideal quarterback for Kirby Smart's high-powered offense, and Beck took some notes during the early days of his Bulldogs career.
Speaking to the Player's Lounge on YouTube in August last year, Beck said about Bennett:
"The persona he carries is like next play, next play, next play. It's like there's nothing like ever fazed him. You know what I'm saying? He's always locked in."
Bennett's ability to lock in brought incredible success to the Georgia Bulldogs program. He was instrumental in the team winning two CFP national championships and earned MVP honors in both games.
Carson Beck took over the starting job after Stetson Bennett entered the NFL
The Los Angeles Rams drafted Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. Bennett was a part of a stacked draft class that also included the likes of Bryce Young, C. J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson.
After Bennett departed from the Bulldogs, Carson Beck inherited his starting job at the Bulldogs. It was only natural, as Kirby Smart was patiently developing Beck in those championship runs to be the starting quarterback once Bennett took his talents to the NFL.
Beck had a solid first season as the QB1 for the Bulldogs, leading them to an unbeaten record before losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. The Bulldogs were eventually eliminated from playoff contention.
However, Beck still earned a Second-team All-SEC nod. At the end of the season, Beck decided to forgo the 2024 draft and return for his second season as the Bulldogs' full-time starting quarterback.
How is Carson Beck performing in 2024?
According to his high standards, Carson Beck is having a mixed season. The future NFL draft pick has recorded 3,132 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Beck has guided the Georgia Bulldogs to a 9-2 record ahead of their Week 14 game with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Beck isn't Stetson Bennett, but he's doing a decent job steadying the ship for Kirby Smart's team.
Beck and the Bulldogs will have to dig deep in this year's expanded college football playoffs, which will surely be competitive. At this stage, Beck might want to adopt the play style of Bennett to cross the hurdle in his last year at the collegiate level.
