Florida Gators coach Billy Napier has spent the first three games of the season on the hotseat. After two disappointing seasons with the Gators, fans were hoping for an improvement.
However, in the first three games of the season, the Gators have gone 1-2 (0-1 SEC) and lost heavily to the Miami Hurricanes and the Texas A&M Aggies. That has only made the hot seat even hotter for Napier, which has led some to think Napier could be out of the job soon.
Will Billy Napier get fired?
Napier has been with the Florida Gators for three seasons and has a 12-16 record with only six wins against SEC opponents in Gainsville.
After the poor start to the season, the question is not will Billy Napier get fired but when. Many expect him not to be with the program next year, but how long do the Gators hold on?
While getting rid of a coach mid-season could provide some temporary respite, it could plunge the program into further disarray. Napier is the more experienced member of the team and has been calling the plays.
However, there's no one suitable below him to take on this role. Firing him early without finding a suitable temporary replacement could make exacerbate the team's struggles.
Can the Florida Gators win again?
One way for Billy Napier to continue in his role for as long as possible will be to win games.
Florida. though, has a tough schedule coming up. They face the Texas Longhorns, Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers all on the road. These programs are all ranked in the top-10, with Texas and Georgia the top two teams in the country. The Gators stand little chance in these games, but they should stick with Napier during this period for the sake of consistency.
The best chance the Gators have to win a game against an SEC opponent comes this weekend, when they face the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Mississippi State are also struggling, suffering a 41-17 loss to the Toledo Rockets last weekend, their biggest to a non conference team.
This is the perfect opportunity for the Gators to get a win, which could give them enough momentum to face the likes of the Longhorns and Volunteers.
