Former Indian cricketer and commentary stalwart Arun Lal was recently diagnosed with jaw cancer at the Tata Medical Center in Kolkata. The surgery lasted for 14 hours, which also resulted in a dual platinum rod insertion on his jaw.
Speaking exclusively to Sportskeeda, the 59-year old confirmed that he was back home and on the road to recovery. He said, “Thank god, that the symptoms were caught at a very early stage, around January. I was in constant touch with the doctors there, who really helped me with every step. I am really indebted to the doctors, who left no stone unturned with my diagnosis.”
Doctors treating him said, “This particular kind of cancer is a really rare one as compared to the ones we usually deal with. Hence, we needed do a lot of research and planning prior to the operation. The execution was good, and we can confirm that he is out of danger.”
Lal, who didn't divulge any information about the disease, was only in touch with few close friends and family. A member of a club he frequents in Kolkata said, “Only a few of us knew about this and were in constant touch with him. We are extremely happy that it was a successful surgery and club members are looking forward to his next visit here.”
Another member said, “Within the club hierarchy, ‘Arun da’ is one of the most respected members in the club, and is also incharge of communications. We are all looking forward to his healthy return.”
According to a report by the Hindu, Indian national team member Yuvraj Singh had called Lal to motivate him for the battle. He said, “I know what it feels like because I have been through this. It’s nice if you can share someone’s pain and help him overcome it. I always try to understand the mindset of the patient because it mentally defeats you.”
Now back home, Lal wants to spend time with his family, but has confirmed that he will return to commentary very soon.
