Tuesday was a day for low-scoring games in the Assam T20 Pride Cup 2024, with viewers getting to relish some top-level bowling displays for all the teams involved.

The first match of the day involved the number two City Cricket Club and number three New Star Club taking on each other to get a chance to close the gap with table-topping River Rine Club.

The second game was another disappointment for those who enjoy heavy batting action. In the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati, Gauhati Town Club and Bud Cricket Club had a chance to move up the table with a victory.

The results of the day meant that the New Star Club leapfrogged their opponents City Cricket Club to second place in the Assam T20 Pride Cup 2024 standings. New Star Club have won three out of their six matches, accumulating eight points with a healthy net run rate (NRR) of +0.684. Meanwhile, City Cricket Club dropped one spot and are now in third place with three wins out of six, but with a slightly worse NRR of +0.443.

Meanwhile, Bud Cricket Club jumped one spot to fourth place at the expense of their opponents, Gauhati Town Club. Gauhati Town Club dropped one spot to fifth place with just two wins in seven matches, as well as a low NRR of -0.614.

Pankaj Rai’s four-wicket heroics unable to prevent defeat despite bowlers dominating proceedings on the day

The first match of the day witnessed New Star Club winning the toss and electing to field first. In the first innings, a 2/25 spell from all-rounder Kalam Raiza kept City Cricket Club to a meagre total of 119/7 in 20 overs. The hosts had to thank a splendid innings from Shaan Singh Rana (36 runs off 21 deliveries) for being able to set a competitive target.

However, New Star’s decision to bat second came in handy in the next half of the game. Despite none of their batters really setting the field on fire, the team slowly crept towards the target of 120. A crucial performance from tail-ender Imran Seikh (29 runs off 10 deliveries) ensured a victory for the visitors in the match, as they finished at 125/8.

One of the highlights of the day was City Cricket Club bowler Pankaj Rai, who posted figures of 4/12 in four overs. However, even such a performance was unable to help City Cricket Club defend 119 against New Star Club, as the latter won with two deliveries to spare.

Gauhati Town Club won the toss and elected to bat first in the second game of the day. However, on a slow pitch exacerbated by rain scares, the hosts could only manage 88, losing all 10 wickets. Except for a 39-run (from 38 deliveries) performance from opener Bishal Sharma, most of the other batters struggled to even reach double digits, mainly due to a three-wicket haul from Sanjib Dutta.

In the second innings, the Bud Cricket Club raced to the target with a run rate just below 8.0 in the opening six overs, helped by a brilliant start from opener Abhilash Kumar Maurya (31 runs off 21 deliveries). Bud Cricket Club eventually scored 91/6 in just 14.3 overs.

There were other notable bowling performances in the second match of the day as well. Bud Cricket Club bowler Sanjib Dutta returned with a three-wicket haul on the day, and conceded just 18 runs.
