Zimbabwe batter Sean Williams has been handed an official reprimand after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct over an incident during his team's second ODI against Pakistan at Queen’s Park Oval in Bulawayo on Tuesday, November 26. The 38-year-old has been found guilty of showing dissent.
Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in the second one-dayer of the three-match series in Bulawayo to square the series 1-1. The hosts had emerged victorious in the first match at the same venue by 80 runs (DLS method).
Left-handed batter Williams was dismissed for 31 off 39 balls in the 26th over of Zimbabwe's innings in the second ODI against Pakistan. He was adjudged leg before to Saim Ayub, but was unhappy with the decision and expressed his disappointment over the same.
An official release by ICC stated that the Zimbabwe batter has been deemed guilty of having violated Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. Specifically, he breached Article 2.8, which relates to 'showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.'
Apart from being reprimanded, one demerit point has also been added to Williams' disciplinary record, which is his first offense within 24 months. On-field umpires Michael Gough and Forster Mutizwa, along with third umpire Iknow Chabi and fourth umpire Langton Rusere, leveled the charge against the batter.
The veteran Zimbabwe batter admitted to the offense and also accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft. As a result, there will be no formal hearing in the matter.
Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
Sean Williams has failed to convert starts in the ODI series against Pakistan
Having the experience of 158 ODI matches, Williams is one of the key members of Zimbabwe's current batting outfit. The southpaw has got starts in both matches of the ongoing one-day series against Pakistan but has failed to convert them. Before his 31 in the second game, he was dismissed for 23 in the first ODI.
Pakistan chased down 146 in just 18.2 overs in the second one-dayer to square the three-match series. Saim Ayub clobbered 113* off 62 balls, hitting 17 fours and three sixes. The series decider will be played in Bulawayo on November 28.
