The opening round of the UP T20 League 2024 season came to a conclusion on Monday, September 9 at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium. In a virtual knockout fixture, the Kanpur Superstars defeated Gorakhpur Lions to claim the fourth spot on the points table.
Meerut Mavericks with 16 points finished the league stage at the top of the six-team standings courtesy of eight wins from 10 fixtures. Lucknow Falcons registered six wins in 10 games and finished at number two on the table. Both Mavericks and Falcons will now face each other in the first Qualifier of the tournament.
Kashi Rudras retained their number three position after the end of the league stage. With 10 points from 10 matches and an NRR of -0.266, they will now face fourth-placed Kanpur Superstars in the impending Eliminator.
Gorakhpur Lions fell short of a place in the knockouts after losing to the Superstars. The defeat prevented them from enhancing their tally of eight points. Noida Super Kings claimed the season’s wooden-spooner tag by securing just two wins from 10 fixtures with a dismal NRR of -1.219.
Vineet Panwar hands Superstars a place in the knockouts
Gorakhpur Lions batted first and amounted just 104 from 19.2 overs. Wicketkeeper-batter Hardeep Singh top-scored with 29 of those runs while captain Akshdeep Nath made a sluggish 17. For the Kanpur Superstars, bowlers Vineet Panwar (3/28) and Mukesh Kumar (2/11) orchestrated the demolition job by restricting the Lions to a modest total.
In response, Kanpur Superstars catered themselves to an easy seven-wicket win with 15 balls still intact in the game. Unbeaten opening batter Shoaib Siddiqui top-scored with 48* runs from 54 balls, while slamming five boundaries and a six. He shared a 94-run partnership with Adarsh Singh (35) after the first-ball departure of Ankur Malik.
