Pakistan Cricket Board to help find banned spinner Danish Kaneria a job
Kaneria last played for Pakistan in 2010
The Pakistan Cricket Board will reportedly come to the aid of banned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria and help him find a permanent job.
The tweaker was banned for life by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in June 2012 after being convicted of spot-fixing. However, Kaneria denied the allegations saying that the ECB had evicted him relying on false statements given by convicted English county cricketer, Mervyn Westfield.
It was Ramesh Kumar, a Hindu member of parliament who belonging to the ruling party PML-N who raised the issue. He felt that it was unfair for the PCB to not come forward and provide financial support to Kaneria who according to him is “struggling to make both ends meet”.
"Yes the MNA and others did raise an issue with the fact that Kaneria who had served Pakistan cricket for so long was without any job because of the ban imposed on him and was finding it difficult to make ends meet", a source said, as quoted by International Business Times.
Reportedly the PCB has said that it would help out the cricketer in finding a stable and well-paying job, most probably in a department related to the game.
"But the MNA insisted that the PCB should give him a cricket-related job and this is not possible since the life ban on him by the ECB means he can't have anything to do with cricket after being found guilty of corruption."
The ban from the ECB also prohibits Kaneria from engaging in any professional cricket activity in Pakistan or anywhere else in the globe. So even if the PCB wants to have him in the PSL or any other domestic tournament they cannot do so.
Kaneria is Pakistan’s most successful leg spinner in Test matches. He has bagged 261 wickets from 61 Tests at a strike rate of 67.8 and 15 five wicket hauls. His bowling average in Test matches is an impressive 34.79. He also has an excellent economy rate of 3.07.
He, however, could not replicate his Test brilliance in One-Dayers where he has picked up just 15 wickets from 18 games.
From 2000 to 2010, Kaneria was a regular in the Pakistan side and was quite a weapon for his captain. 12/94 is his best figures in Test matches.
