The next retro game to make a modern-day appearance could be Rare's Battletoads, according to a recent trademark filing by Microsoft. It’s also one of the most requested titles by the fans to be released. The old version was released on the NES in 1991. Due to it’s very difficult levels, the game grew a huge fan base. Especially the “turbo tunnel” level which made the fans so emotionally attached to the game. The crossover title Battletoads & Double Dragon hit the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, in 1993.

When IGN contacted Microsoft regarding the copyrights. One of their representative said “Microsoft often acquires various trademarks as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment.”

A recent filling by Microsoft with the United States Patent and Trademark Office suggests we could see a new Battletoads game in the future. Unfortunately, the file does not provide any details as to what Microsoft intends to do with the license, such as making a brand new game, remake or re-release of one of the old Battletoads games.
