At least 100,000 fans flocked to the Flemington racecourse and 700 million people in around 120 countries were estimated to have watched the race on television.

Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s best-known horse-racing event and is held on the first Tuesday of November every year.

The massive national event is popularly dubbed as “the race that stops a nation”. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria and sees millions gamble on the winner.
