As you progress in the game, you realize the palace has a mind of its own. It works in a mysterious way and will do everything to protect itself. Everything you do have consequences unless you're doing it in the dark. The palace creates Echoes- echoes of you. The palace creates clones and the clones are limited to your own action. They do everything you do, and they can't do whatever you have not. The palace creates your enemies but your actions shape them. The only time you can act without consequence is when the palace is dark. The palace can't see you in dark and so it can't copy your actions but every time you so something in the light, your enemies will learn it.
The palace reboots often and this is the time it goes dark. During the dark, your echoes will learn and unlearn new behaviors of you and in the next light they will come after you with those advanced moves but anything you do can't be copied during the dark.
The only thing that never changes in the game is that your echoes will always try to kill you.
