This was the first game of three successful Smackdown vs Raw series launched by the WWE and marked the start of a real boom in WWE video game sales on the PS2. The career mode was replaced with full-voice acting, and graphics were drastically improved to ensure a virtual experience like no other at the time.

This became the first game to introduce online multiplayer in WWE and included the much-beloved bra and panties mode for fans to play in.
