Anthem Demo Review: A fun enthralling adventure awaits

Anthem
Anthem

I went into playing Anthem's public demo with a sceptical mindset. Of course, I was sceptical, its a game published by EA, the most hated videogame company in the industry right now.

Well, what's surprising is I came out quite optimistic and cheerful. It's because Anthem is actually good. I feared the game won't have any depth to it and would be a mindless looter-shooter, just like Destiny, but fortunately, it ain't.

There are interesting stories to be found in the world of Anthem.

Well, I believe I spent more time exploring Fort Tarsis-Anthem's version of safe hub then actually doing missions or roaming around in the open world.

Its because it attains the charm of Bioware's previous games-to some extent at least.

I went off the radar, trying to talk to different NPC's I could(most of them were locked in demo obviously) but the ones I could chat with was quite interesting.

For example, there's this guy called Amal - a bartender which you can talk to. He states that he has a problem with a lady who wants to date him but he's confused so he asks the freelancer for a suggestion-which is me. Here's where the role-playing elements of the game come in to play. Now if you return back later to talk with Amal he will tell you that he followed your suggestion regarding that "aggressive" lady and now needs advice about some other girl he's into it.

Such conversations immediately sent waves of nostalgia down my spine because it reminded of me old school Bioware games where NPC interactions played a major role. I'm glad to see that they are making an appearance in their latest adventure as well.

Speaking of stories, even the main quest related to Matthias is quite fun and interesting and I can't wait to see how Anthem's main story plays out.

Gameplay has depth like the level of NPCs in the previous Bioware titles.

Alright, so Anthem's gameplay is much much meatier than that of Destiny. Especially once I unlocked the Interceptor Javelin (which by the way I have been meaning to try since a long time) the combat turned a lot of fun as well as tactical. The game provides you with a hell lot of tools and weapons to take down different enemies and mind you there is quite a variety of them in this game. Combat scenarios ain't easy though, proper communication and strategies should be planned out between the team members before going on a mission and I loved that part of the game. What's more is that how fluid the flying and shooting mechanics are. I absolutely loved traversing the huge areas of Anthem at an unprecedented speed and it was amazing.

Overall I enjoyed the combat and loot system of Anthem and can't wait to play the entire game.

Aside everything Anthem ain't that perfect, at least not now. There were areas where framerates dropped below 30 FPS and I played on a standard PS4. Moreover, the concerns regarding the microtransactions still exist because its a game developed by EA after all. But in spite of everything Anthem ain't an empty game like I thought it would.

It's a thrilling new adventure with different layers of Bioware's previous work as well as exciting new features that I can't wait to explore for myself.

Anthem is out 22 February 2019 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
