Dota 2 Guide: How to Win a Lost Game?

I have seen a lot of players giving up when the odds are against them in a Dota 2 match. Sometimes it is the sheer pressure of the enemy lineup which makes the players quit mentally before they even begin the game. Maybe the enemy has early game heroes which pressure towers and choke the opposing team from any farm. However, it is important to understand that like other sports a game of dota can turn in a matter of minutes. One or two huge fights and wrong decisions can lead to a great comeback.

We will discuss a great way to make an incredible comeback from even the toughest of games. This guide may need you to practice certain heroes if you haven't played them. The guide is divided into phases, it will explain concepts of dota which you need to implement while playing.

Which heroes to pick?

Although all heroes in the game of dota are really powerful, they all have specific roles and functions. Some are great tower pushers while others are great gankers and team fight heroes. We need to pick heroes who can clear the creep waves really fast, be great late game cores, have high mobility to reach different places of the map and are able to solo kill other heroes. Some examples of these heroes are Storm Spirit, Slark, Queen of Pain, Nature's Prophet etc.

Stop doing what you are doing

Most of the times when you are losing a game, the enemy heroes will be grouping up and pushing towers or taking other objectives like Roshan. Most players tend to wait for the enemy behind their towers or barracks to defend, which is the right thing to do if you are equal or ahead in the game. However, when you are losing it is likely that the enemy has more net worth than your team and it is highly probable to lose teamfights when defending the buildings. Losing team fights while defending will just enable the enemy to clean sweep more objectives after your team is dead.

Split Pushing

Split pushing is one of the most annoying plays one can make in a game of dota. As discussed earlier you are playing heroes which have great ability to clear creep waves, enabling you to push lanes. Once you see the enemy team is grouping up to push a lane just go to the opposite lane and start pushing it. Your team will most likely engage in a team fight to defend towers but you will be distracting the enemy from taking your objectives. The result is very simple, even though the enemy team is higher in net worth they have to split and engage resources on you, because you are taking their buildings. As a result they will get out numbered in team fights which will benefit your team as well and slow down the enemy’s push. If you have ample farm you may even kill the enemy heroes trying to rotate to stop you.

Creep Cutting

The concept of cutting creeps is game saving. This concept will only apply when the other lanes(except the one in which the enemy is pushing) is pushed out. Basically, you need to apply split push first and then resort to creep cutting to be hundred percent successful. If you are not able to handle the other two lanes on your own, you can ask one of your teammates(preferably a support) to keep shoving the creep waves and keep the lane pushed without going too deep in the other half of the map.

Now the question which arises is what is the concept of creep cutting?

It is very simple, for example the enemy is pushing to take your middle Tier-2 tower and the bottom and top lanes are pushed towards the enemy base. You just have to go behind the enemy team and cut their lane creeps from joining them while they push. This will activate Backdoor Protection which is a passive ability granting the towers high damage resistance and quick healing. Most of the times it will be impossible for the enemy team to push that lane and as a result they will have to retreat and catch you first. As discussed earlier, you are playing a high mobility hero who can clear waves and move very fast, so it will be very difficult for the enemy heroes to catch you. They will waste resources and you will stall them, earning your team much the needed time they lacked.

Things to Note

  • When you go for split pushing always walk to the lane so you have your TP off cooldown, enabling you to escape or return to your base. You can use Boots of Travel and TP combo also.
  • Split pushing requires a lot of map awareness and constant checking on enemy heroes and their positions. Initially, wrong judgement will leave you feeding the enemy team but you will gain a lot of MMR in the long run.
  • Tier-1s and Shrines does not have backdoor protection so creep cutting concept does not apply there.
  • Both concepts of Split pushing and creep cutting helps you to farm faster and get ahead in net worth enabling you to then fight and win the game.
