Video: Duisburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken commits real-life FIFA 18 glitch

Mark Flekken
Duisburg FC are currently at the 4th spot and will play away to Holstein Kiel next weekend

What's the story?

German club Duisburg’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken committed an error which can be only seen in a FIFA game, much to amaze of the supporters present at the MSV Arena on Saturday afternoon. The incident looked more like a glitch in a computerised game rather than a one being committed in the real world.

In case you didn't know...

The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute of the match by a strike from Ahmet Engin. Five minutes later, in a very comic fashion, Ingolstadt balanced the scoreboard in the crucial second division Bundesliga clash. The visiting side was down to ten men just a minute before halftime. A 66th-minute goal scored from the spot earned Duisburg full points in the tie.

The heart of the matter

Leading by one goal, Duisburg defender Gerrit Nauber tried to head a loose ball towards their goalkeeper, but the Dutchman was inside the net and facing the opposite direction searching for his water bottle. Ingolstadt’s striker Kutschke took advantage of the situation and steered the ball towards the target. Flekken turned around only to see the ball sail past the goal line as it was too late to react.

What's next?

Duisburg FC are currently at the 4th spot in the standings and will play away to Holstein Kiel next weekend. Ingolstadt who played in the German Bundesliga in 2015 is now at the ninth position and is unlikely to qualify for the top flight next season.

Author's take

We have many bizarre and comical incidents on a football field before but I cannot recall such a hilarious a team has conceded. Although Flekken will be getting nightmares of the moment throughout his life, mistakes are bound to happen as they are human beings. Grabbing three points from clash will definitely overshadow the error but the defensive unit has to be careful from the next match.
