Football Manager 2019 hit the stores on 2 November for MacOS and Windows. As the name says, this title completely focuses on the managerial aspects of the beautiful game. One has to manage the tactics and plays from the touchline and guide their team to glory.

One of the most important things that change the outcome of a game is the set-piece conversion ratio, let it be from corners, free kicks or throw-ins. Players must focus on converting as many offensive set-pieces as possible and must minimise the damage caused while defending them.

In this article, let us not wait any longer and look closer at a couple of tips that should help you to master the art of set pieces in Football Manager 2019.

Corners

Defence

In the defensive corners, ensure that the centre backs are positioned right in front of the goalpost as these players possess good stats for heading, blocking and tackling, allowing them to clear those dangerous balls to the box.

Position the fullbacks and the defensive midfielders near the edge of the box to pounce on the loose ball and build a counter-attack from there. Also, ask players who are good in the air to mark tall opposition players as they are often the goalscorers from a corner.

Position a striker upfront along with a pacy winger near the halfway mark of the pitch so as to allow for a quick break if the opposition gives away the ball in a cheap fashion. With good pace, one could catch the defence off guard and open a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Offence

During offensive corners, bring both of your centre-backs forward into the box as these players often are very good in the air, allowing you to convert these corners into valuable goals.

As both the central defenders leave their position, ensure that you position both your fullbacks at the halfway line. Fullbacks often boast decent stats for defending and pace, allowing them to both defend and keep up with the pacy forwards of the opposition.

Position a player who has high stats for long shots right at the edge of the box to allow him to shoot from a distance if the ball is scrambled out from the box. An acrobatic striker who is good in the air could be positioned in the box while a wide midfielder with good crossing stats could be used on occasions to take a short corner and bring a driven cross into the box to upset the balance of the team.

Defence

Position the centre-backs in the box to mark tall players and move the wing-backs near the edge of the box to create pressure on the opposition. Midfielders who have decent defensive stats could be used to cover the areas right in front of the centre-backs.

Position a striker or pacey winger near the halfway line to catch the opposition off-guard on a break.

Offence

Set-up an offensive throw-in tactic if your team has a player who possesses good stats for long distance throws, else, play it short and try to whip the ball into the box with a driven cross.

Position three defenders, including two central defenders near the halfway line so that they provide a solid defence to neutralise a counter-attack.

One wing-back could be allowed to move forward into a deep crossing role. However, one should balance this a clever opposition will break from the side the gap is left open by the full-back.

Players who are good at shooting from a distance could be employed outside the box while the strikers and attacking midfielders are most effective at close range.

Defence

Generally, in Football Manager 2019, the teams tend to fire the ball directly towards goal rather than building from a set piece. Indirect or wide free kicks warrant more action as the teams would be looking to build on from the set piece. In any event, one should position a single tall player in the wall along with a couple of other players to apply pressure on the opposition.

Position a pacy striker or a winger near the halfway mark to launch that quick counter-attack. The rest of the team could be used to crowd the box for clearances in an event when the ball ends up in this area. Moreover, always man-mark the opposition.

Offence

Use a player with high attributes to take a straight free-kick while positioning the entire defensive line near the halfway mark of the pitch. Crowd the box with other players to pounce on the loose balls.

For wide free kicks, one could bring in the centre-backs forward and leave the fullbacks near the half-line and could employ similar tactics of an offensive corner with subtle variations.
