The evolution of games have been staggeringly amazing in the wake of new developments in technology and software. A decade ago, could you even imagine the precision and the in-depth gameplay in GTA 5? However, let’s not forget our humble roots and respect the platform that gave us some of the most exciting games of the long forgotten era – MS-DOS. Luckily for those who love to thrive in nostalgia, there is some good news. Internet Archive announced that it would release several popular MS-DOS titles for download. So if you are worried as to what you need to download, let me help you out and suggest ten games that should definitely be there on your wishlist.

#10 Golden Axe

best MS-DOS games of all time

You love slashing villains? Here’s some old wine stuff for you! This famous game has you play a Viking sort of warrior and have you swish and slash your axe through villains of various sizes – big or small, male or female. Some even ride up to you on a fire-breathing dragon, which you can also ride and burn things!!! Ah, good old times!!!

#9 Lode Runner

Come on, don’t say you haven’t heard about this one? Lode Runner – a game where you are a thief who has to steal gold and escape from the clutches of the villains by traipsing down the ladders and burning down the floors to trap the people chasing you. You could also create your own levels if you find the ones offered by the game to be boring.

#8 Eye of the Beholder

MS-DOS is also known for its share of RPG’s, and the Eye of the Beholder is the best of the lot in this category. You get to use four warriors, as you traipse around dungeons and fight various ghouls, skeletons and monsters. Going into a trilogy, each part is enjoyable and exciting enough for you to stay on and slay a few monsters.

#7 Leisure Suit Larry

best MS-DOS games of all time

Leisure Suit Larry might raise some conservative eye-brows around here, for this was one of the earliest adult themed games. However, LSL needs to be mentioned here, for tackling several mature themes for a platform that was long thought to be confined to kids.

Instead of fighting around in some faraway galaxy, all you had to do is go to the local bar and hit on some girls. Don’t feel so relaxed; fighting off aliens and zombies is easier than this…

#6 The Castle of Dr. Brain

Even the puzzle-lovers had a ball back then. The Castle Of Dr. Brain was not just your routing game where you get to click stuff and find out what’s beneath them or if the wrong click lost you the game. It uses your knowledge on various matters like music, science, math and even arts to help you proceed ahead. Why do you think they even named it after Dr. Brain?

#5 SimCity

The classic city building game also has its plots built on the MS-DOS platform. You have to build an entire city on a specific region with the limited funds that you have. But your job doesn’t just stop at that. You have to make sure you also earn a lot from the industries that you have set up, while protecting the city from natural disaters, like fire, floods, and even man-made anomalies like crime.

#4 Super Street Fighter II

best MS-DOS games of all time

The title that brought the series super acclaim also had its origins in in the MS-DOS platform. SSF 2 was a game-changer as far as video-games go. No matter how many games were released modelled on this one, nothing could beat the style and the fun this title provided.

Later installments did somewhat lose the charm the game had brought to the series, so it’s good to go back to the original one to know what a true fighting game means.

#3 Wolfenstein 3D

I am sure that this game needs no introduction. One of the most popular games had its origins here. The graphics really looks outdated compared to latest installment, but the game doesn’t compromise on the violence and blood. This First person shooter has you kill all those stupid wicked Nazis with a flourish.

The latest title in the Wolfenstein series might have some advanced gameplay and animations, but nothing can beat the old world charm, can it?

#2 Arkanoid

Your love for those games where you had to hit bricks to earn points may have started from here. Though this game had earned its share of countless counterfeiters as the years went by, some even improving on the design and the fun part, nothing beat the charm of the old one! Especially that funny sound effects…quite vintage and priceless…

#1 Prince of Persia

best MS-DOS games of all time

The Aladdin inspired game has its roots in this platform as well. Here you play a desperate young man who is out to save the love of the life from the clutches of an evil magician. The fact that she is a princess is not a matter of consideration, but the greedy hero does have to go through several obstacles like heavily-skilled guards, reanimated skeletons, traps, chasms, poisons and, the worst of all, an effing time-limit. Boy, becoming the next prince is such an arduous task! I am better off writing stuff!
