Valentine’s Day – the day couples all over the world proclaimed their undying love for each other recently concluded, and with that in mind we couldn’t help making a list of the best couples to ever grace the video game world. Believe it or not, Cupids arrow has even travelled to the video game universe, with many games featuring their own sweethearts who would do just about anything for each other - come what may. So let’s take a look at the video game romances that had us completely bowled over.
#8 Master Chief & Cortana (Halo series)
Their romance is rather unusual mostly due to Cortana being a holographic AI, but then again guys go for the strangest gals (Just ask Kanye West). The duo have been together through good times and bad, and have learned to trust each other beyond question. You’ll never find a romance as unique as this one in any video game.
#7 Cloud & Aerith (Final Fantasy VII)
Cloud, the protagonist of Final Fantasy VII, developed a blossoming romance with Aerith a young flower seller, but their time together came to an untimely end due to Aerith’s untimely death at the hands of Sephiroth – the game’s villain. Her death was undoubtedly brutal, but the worst part was Cloud’s utter helplessness at the time. Cloud did find love again in the form of Tifa, but his first love was irreplaceable.
#6 Diddy & Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong series)
One of the most joyous relationships in video games has to be the one shared between Diddy and Dixie Kong. The duo team up to save the famous Donkey Kong from the clutches of the evil Kaptain K Rool.
Not only do they share an amazing romance, but also work in tandem to defeat enemies along the way, which makes their relationship all the more brilliant. Who says gorillas, who we’ve descended from, can’t find true love?
#5 The Prince & Princess Farah (Price Of Persia series)
The Prince and Princess Farah shared an amazing relationship in POP: TSOT, and famously proclaimed their love in the games famous bathtub scene. Unfortunately their romance ended on a tragic note after the Princess sacrifices herself in order to save the Prince.
The Prince manages to reverse her death with the help of the dagger of time, but the dagger comes with a price – memory loss, which leaves the princess with no recollection of her romance with the Prince. However their romance was rekindled in Prince Of Persia: The Two Thrones, courtesy of time distortion.
#4 Dom & Maria (Gears Of War)
Dom Santiago, Marcus Fenix’s loyal partner in the Gears Of War series, enjoyed a beautiful albeit tragic romance with his wife Maria. The pair met when they were just 11 years old and eventually confirmed their love in a marriage which bore two children. Unfortunately the couple’s children perished in E-Day, a holocaust unleashed by the Locust Horde, which drove Maria into deep depression and eventually led to her disappearance.
Dom manages to locate her in a Locust prison, but her captors tortured her so much that she ended up in a vegetative state with little or no memory of the past. Dom, unable to bear seeing her in that state, proclaims his love to Maria one final time before putting her out of her misery.
#3 Max & Mona (Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne)
The romance between Max and Mona was indeed an unusual one as Max was an NYPD detective whereas Mona was an assassin for hire who had drugged Max when the two first met (And people thought getting stood up by a girl was bad).
In spite of their contrasting backgrounds Mona, who had survived her injuries in the first game, developed a romance with Max in the sequel and fought alongside him through thick and thin until Mona ended up getting shot in the head by the games villain Vladmir, for her refusal to kill Max. Her death was one of the reasons that drove Max into deep depression which was witnessed in the third game.
#2 Jack & Jenny (The Darkness)
Another couple that earns a top spot on this list are Jackie & Jenny from The Darkness. The sweethearts were both orphans and became inseparable since childhood even though Jenny didn’t know that Jackie grew up to become a hitman for mobster Uncle Paulie.
Their romance ended in tragedy after Jenny’s life was snuffed out by Uncle Paulie after differences crop up between him and Jackie – who becomes devastated after her death and uses the power of a supernatural force called the Darkness to rein hell upon Uncle Paulie and his crew.
#1 Mario & Peach (Super Mario series)
No other couple but Mario and Peach deserve to occupy the top spot on this list. I’d even go so far as to call them video games’ most famous couple. Their affection for each other is simply amazing, with Mario willing to take on all the obstacles the Mushroom Kingdom has to offer in order to rescue his beloved Princess Peach from the clutches of the evil Browser. Real life couples can take a leaf out of their book too.
