best video games based on TV shows

TV shows have been a very popular source of entertainment right from the beginning with I Dream of Jenny, Different Strokes, The Bold and The Beautiful, Star Trek anderrBaywatch ruling our hearts. Currently the popularity of TV shows is so high, that we have A-list movie stars like Julia Roberts, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Spacey toplining some of the most critically acclaimed pieces of television fiction. People even say the content of the shows are much, much better than the movies we have, and with Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Friends, Modern Family in our plate, I cant help but agree with them. With regards to the gaming zone, do you know some very good games are actually based on a few of these shows? You can find below, nine titles that have won your hearts as TV shows, and are also not bad in racing your adrenaline as video games.

#9 Lost

best video games based on TV shows

Based on: Lost

Lost was a highly critically acclaimed TV series (except for its lame finale…) based on a group of plane crash survivors marooned on a mysterious island, that made stars out of Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Rodriguez etc.

The game follows the same plot but with a new protagonist, not seen on the show. Not to worry, you still have your fave series characters coming on and off amidst the narrative. Though it was not as critically acclaimed as the TV series, it was one of the very few shows that stayed true to the spirit to its original creation.

#8 The Simpsons: Hit & Run

Based on: The Simpsons

The Simpsons is one of the longest running animated series, more famous for its satirical depictions of the events around the world through a typical American middle-class family. It is also the show to have a large number of voice-cameos, from the likes of the late Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, and others.

The Simpsons game, released in 2003, is similar to GTA series in its setting, with the racing and action, but has a more fun element that makes it look like a parody of the latter. Plus, it has aliens as well!!!

#7 The Adventures of Batman & Robin

Based on: Batman: The Animated Series

This is Batman as we used to know him, and not the dark broody caped crusader that doesn’t know how to have fun, as per Christopher Nolan. Sure, Batman: The Animated Series had its inspirations from the campy Adam West series (Shark repellant, anyone?), but some cheesiness is definitely good.

After all, being a superhero can’t be all that bad and depressing. In the game, you have Robin for company (dressed as gaudily as you know him!), while you get to fight Joker, Poison Ivy, The Penguin and a few more famous Gotham villains. If you loved Contra, you would definitely love this!

#6 Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds

best video games based on TV shows

Based on: Buffy, The Vampire Slayer

Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, is what brought the Geek God, Joss Whedon, more famous for his work with Marvel’s The Avengers, to limelight. It has Buffy Summers, a normal teenage girl, who is not so normal after her school hours, when she fights vampires.

The above game is one of the best ones based on the series and also allows you to play characters other than Buffy. Kicking vampires’ asses have never been more fun!

One grudge, though…Sarah Michelle Gellar was definitely hotter in the series than in her game avatar.

#5 Game of Thrones

Based on: Game of Thrones

GOT is one of my favorite TV shows that is currently ruling the hearts of every fantasy-adventure loving geek in the world. HBO’s hottest property based on a series of fantasy novels by George R. Martin, it is already in its fifth season. The Lannisters, The Starks, The Dothraki’s are all part of cult folklore by now.

The 2014 game is based more on the novels than the series, as it has us following a different house and set of characters, like the Walking Dead game. Though the depiction of graphic violence is not compromised, the makers had covered up the…err…other selling point of the series, if you know what I mean. Don’t worry, despos!!! You still have Playboy: The Mansion game at your beck and call!

#4 DuckTales

best video games based on TV shows

Based on: DuckTales

Once upon a time, the kids in the 90’s used to wait for Sundays to start their morning with the DoorDarshan channel. Why? Because, we had DuckTales!!! The cartoon series had our favorite miser, Uncle Scrooge, his loveable trio of nephews and the perennial favorite, Donald Duck mostly in a cameo appearance.

The 1990 video game based on the series, had us follow the miserly Scrooge on a treasure hunt to become the world’s richest man…sorry duck!!! Oh yes, childhood was definitely fun!!!

#3 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game

best video games based on TV shows

Based on: TMNT cartoon series

Many of you must have loved to watch the cartoon series and the live-action series based on the ninja-loving turtles (Yup, the ones whose innocent images were ruthlessly destroyed by Michael Bay, by portraying them as creepy and pervy amphibians in the 2014 action flick).

The game, which was released in 1989, is the best piece of entertainment made on the green fighters (followed closely by Turtles in Time). Play this one for nostalgia’s sake or if you want to wash off the bad taste left by the Michael Bay flick!

#2 The Walking Dead

Based on: The Walking Dead

One of the best running zombie shows on the series also has a pretty good video-game series backing it up, in case you aren’t fed up of the undead munching on your brains. It doesn’t follow the characters from the TV series, instead letting you get habituated with new characters original to the game.

This works pretty well as a player, as you do not come with any pre-conceived notions. And frankly, we are just fed up seeing Rick Grimes and his growing, untidy beard!

#1 South Park: The Stick of Truth

best video games based on TV shows

Based on: South Park

South Park is an animated series that is targeted towards the adult audiences, due to its risqué humor. (Just check the name of the movie based on the series – South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut!). The game, based on this series, was released last year to a very a high critical acclaim for its uncoventional narrative and truly enjoyable quests. Although a fun game that doesnt take itself too seriously, it still has aliens, zombies, Nazi’s, wizards, elves – everything that you want in a perfect fantasy game.

Any more great games based on TV shows that I have missed??? Please feel free to share the titles in the comments section...
